About
The Latin American Studies Program (LASP) offers interdisciplinary courses and programming that examine the cultures, histories and politics of Latin America from regional and global perspectives. We explore the many connections and diversity of the peoples, regions, and nations that compose the contested geographies of what we call Latin America. Courses and faculty are drawn from across schools and departments, with wide-ranging geographic and historical expertise. Thematic strengths include: Afro-Latin American studies, border studies, environmental studies, Indigenous studies, Latin American literature and visual culture, and political and social movement history. LASP students take courses in a variety of languages spoken throughout the region, including English, K’iche’, Kreyòl, Portuguese, and Spanish. The program also promotes the multidisciplinary study of the Americas through its role in the University of Virginia’s Americas Center/Centro de las Américas. LASP offers an undergraduate major and minor and supports a range of study abroad programs that enrich student learning and cultural exchanges.
